Campione! Weekly Update – Episode 3

Campione! makes mythology sexy. But is it enough to carry the show?

I am a sucker for mythology. Was it just me or did anyone else find the whole justification for the association between the Snake and Athena to be brilliant. Impressively, the show’s facts were correct and verifiable by trusted sources such as Wikipedia! Now what I don’t get is why kissing is such a great conduit for information. Sure the tongue has a vast amount of neurons in it, but how can you concentrate when your sucking face. Godou, you have balls of steel. Or your gay. Nothing wrong with that, but somehow you managed to pay attention to Erica’s little history lesson.

Again, viewers were entreated to some great action, no thanks to Godou. Erica’s fluid movements really brings this Anime to life and gives me something to look forward to every week.Sadly, I don’t look forward to actual plot.

Campione! has the one cour blues. At times it had jump hula hoops through the light novel’s plot to get to the meat of the action. With proper editing and some amendments to the storyline this could have been okay. Once in a while we’re stuck with these awkward moments such as the generic shrine maidenyelling at Godou. Last episode she was scared shitless by the demon king. Did something happen that I missed? It could just be poor character building on this series’ part but I’ll give the show the benefit of the doubt. As a critic I am just too nice of a guy.

Oh Erica… Why do the attempts to give your personality some depth seem so vain? Her motives are still unclear but I have the smallest suspicion that her love for Godou is not a farce. Right now she could either be an secretly manipulative matron, or just another Dere-Dere throwaway trope. But in light of the rather two dimensional cast surrounding her, I would bet on the latter.

  1. No doubt Erica just wants Godou’s babies. I also found the whole kissing thing ridiculously silly. But at least now we know that french kissing a loli can lead to death. That’s a life lesson right there.

  2. I’m the kind of person who tends to take things in shows at face value, unless they give a clue as to ulterior motives (and let’s be honest, usually the shows love to give you those clues, so it’s not like this is a rare proposition). So I’m on board with Erica being all “Hey Godou, let’s get through this so I can get some snuggly time.” Plus, if little sister doesn’t like you, that means you’re probably ok…
