Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko – First Impressions

kawaii ne~

So far, Spring has been a really great season for anime. Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko., Henneko for short, came out as one of its surprises. It’s a romantic comedy show produced by J.C. Staff based from a Light Novel of the same title. The first episode is really entertaining and energetic and there seems to be something more in this show so let’s see how it unfolds.

yokodera youto

The story starts with Yokodera Youto, who’s not been able express his actual thoughts. He has this facade, which prevents him from doing what he likes and that is – Spending time thinking about women! So, after hearing about the rumour evidenced by his friend Ponta, he goes to see the Cat Statue. It is believed that it can free someone from something they don’t need and give it to someone else who needs it more. He wishes to remove his facade and let his perverted self prevail. But before that, he met Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, a girl who can’t hide her feelings at all. She prays together with Youto to be more adult like and to be able to hide her feelings a “little”. The Stone Statue grants their wishes and that’s when the problems start.

Youto’s facade is gone and he constantly blurts out every perverted thought in his mind. Tsukiko, on the other hand, can’t  even show her feelings on her face. The two learn that their wishes have caused them more problems and difficulties than before.

dead or die

Together, they came up with a plan to find who gained their lost traits. Here comes our Ojou-sama tsundere Azuki Azusa. She’s been unable to show her true feelings in front of others and keeps up her ladylike demeaner, which made Tsukiko think that she gained Youto’s lost trait. Youto then asks Azusa to stay by his side in front of many people in an attempt to regain his lost modesty.

sweet huh?

Henneko has the chance to explore themes like accepting who you are and improving yourself, of course, in a not so serious way. Though I expect a tad bit of drama in the end as they’ll come to realize how important those traits are in their lives and in building up their own selves.

I laughed so hard on this scene xD

I’ve really enjoyed this show probably more than I should. It was really funny and the jokes have more hits than misses. The overall atmosphere is light and upbeat, with the help of its bright and colourful visuals. The characters are very adorable with their own unique personalities and dialogue done in really good taste. Their designs are also very appealing and cute, look at those girls!

The sounds are great and the OP “Fantastic Future” by Yukari Tamura [Tsukiko’s VA] is very catchy and memorable. I’d like to note how great Yuki Kaji’s performance for our main lead, Youto. After watching his role as Eren from Shingeki, then now as Youto, he’s proved to be very flexible in his roles. Though, in my opinion, he’s much more suited with this kind of role.

The pacing of the show is a bit fast though. So many events happened in this episode and half of the problem was already solved within this debut. Not that I’m complaining because overall it’s a really fun show.

  1. Nice summary of the first episode! It’s even better than MAL’s in my opinion.

Youto then asks Azusa to stay by his side

More like the opposite; he promises to stay by her side.

The characters are very adorable with their own unique personalities

Yup, the characters here are really likable. In fact, I think it’s customary to ask: who is your favorite character in this show?

half of the problem was already solved within this debut.

Nah, I think there’s way more to the story than just this. More will probably be revealed in the future episodes. And even if it weren’t so, it doesn’t seem like Youto will be able to get his facade back from Azusa that easily. That, and we have to consider that Tsukiko needs to get her own trait back too.

Anyways, nice review and I look forward to reading your future coverage of this series! 🙂

    • Haha thanks! MAL’s summary is quite confusing right? And sorry for the mistake. I’m kinda rushing this review so that I can get into episode 2 🙂

I think that when you already know how to solve a problem, you already solved half of it. All you need to do is to execute your plans and etc. Anyway, I get your point. More problems will probably arise in this show and I’m looking forward on how our adorable characters solve them.

Anyway, as for my favorite character, it would be Tsukiko. You’ll never know what she’s feeling with that emotionless face! And she’s so cute. How bout you?

      Thanks for the comment!

      • Haha, same here! Tsukiko is my favorite as well.

Tsukiko both before and after she made her wish are both very cute in different ways. Though Azusa is really cute too haha.
